Daphne Marlatt reads from Steveston, Month of Hungry Ghosts, and Zócalo
In this recording, Daphne Marlatt reads from Steveston, “In the Month of Hungry Ghosts,” and Zócalo in Frank Davey’s class, likely at York University circa 1979 or 80, where Davey was teaching at the time. Allowing the reading to run to over an hour, Marlatt opens by suggesting that “it’s kind of hard for me to fit myself into something as structured as a 50-minute reading.” The duration, but also the scope of this reading is generous as Marlatt shares a wide range of work that is transnational in topic.
These works include retellings about the predominantly Japanese-Canadian fishing village, Steveston. It also includes multilingual work between English and Malay, detailing a return to Penang, Malaysia where Marlatt spent her early childhood, as well as an account of language politics there.
